Performing and Stuff
Being a proficient physical performer and influenced by her life as an actor, Mauri specializes in character-driven puppetry. She is skilled in most types of puppet performance including hand and rod, body puppets, marionettes, animatronics, and adapted bunraku. She has had the pleasure of performing several iconic characters including the McDonald's Grimace, the Budweiser Frogs, and Salem the cat on Sabrina the Teenage Witch.

Mauri Bernstein has spent most of her life performing all over stage and screen as an actor. Specializing in comedy, she has played almost every flavor of neurotic human. She has created variations of the role of "nerd girl" numerous times for various television programs, from Doogie Howser HBO's Sessions. She has trained at Circle in the Square, New York University, The Acting Studio in New York, Sam Christensen Studio, and the Creative Actor’s Workshop with Scott-Arthur Allen where she eventually taught and coached. Mauri also performed for eleven years as a regular improviser at ComedySportz Los Angeles and wrote and performed sketch comedy for Wasteland Comedy Company and the Search Party.

Coming from a puppetry background in film and television, Mauri has a rich experience of working multi-departmentally and executing
the written page for the screen verbally, emotionally, and visually.
Mauri’s direction is efficient, physical, and emotionally driven.

Working with collaboration as a critical part of an effective workflow where creativity can flourish and the story can find its fullest expression, Mauri enjoys creative problem solving, both in advance and in the moment. She also encourages and helps others to do what they do and tries to ensure they, and their work,
are shown in the best possible light within the context of
creating an engaging and entertaining final product.

A Women in the Director's Chair alumna, Mauri’s films have screened internationally at numerous festivals including the
Action on Film Festival, Sexy International Paris Film Festival, Palm Beach International Women’s Film Festival, Vancouver Women in Film Festival, NSI Short Film Festival, CFC ShortsNonStop, and “Best TV Pilot” at the Seattle True Independent Film Festival.

Largely working in the genre Stupid Comedy for Smart People,
Mauri almost always writes in partnership. With Kevin B. Barron,
she writes life-affirming, character-driven verbal, visual, and physical comedies with the principles of inclusivity, accessibility, and humour.

Their scripts have finalized at the Canada International Film Festival screenwriting competition, One In Ten Screenplay Contest, Hot Shot Shorts, and made the semi’s at Moondance.

Mauri and Kevin have also co-written several television projects including the television special, Active Dog Formula 500,
which was just starting development at Animal Planet
when the network rebranded.

Additionally, Mauri has contributed to a broad selection of sketch comedy, variety shows, and various performance pieces which have played all over Los Angeles, Las Vegas, and Vancouver.
